Company profile
Past
- The company is the brainchild of its director,
Dr Steve Hopkins, a research physicist and lecturer now at Manchester
University whose previous careers include twelve years as a musician and the occasional outing as
a plumber.
- His inspiration comes
firstly from the large and impressive illuminated fountains that act as public attractions around the
world. The aim is to capture their essence, but on a smaller scale suited to typical private
gardens. A second source of inspiration is the kinetic art of a friend, Paul
Friedlander, whose inventive use of 'chromostrobic lighting' has
fascinated audiences around the world and seemed to Steve to have untapped
potential for lighting the many varied forms of flowing water.
Present
- After two years of creative and
technical development, a first product,
the Lumifont is ready for the
marketplace. This is a self-contained, illuminated water feature
that produces amazing and attractive visual effects. It brings life to the
garden by day and dancing colours after dusk.
- The Lumifont is a unique invention (UK
patent app. No. 0419444.5), and is available only from Orrelwood Waterworks.
A small selection of
ready-to-buy, self-contained Lumifont water features can be viewed at
Steve's Manchester studio.
- Steve also offers a custom design service and
has successfully built and installed some larger bespoke water features,
e.g. a waterfall at the Tatton
show, or the Perspex cuboid. He
would be delighted to turn
your light and water feature ideas into realities.
Future
-
Creation of a growing range of
self-contained, illuminated
water features, always with the accent on innovation.
-
Increasing involvement in custom design of light and water sculptures
for large installations and exhibition spaces.
-
A travelling light and water show for
festivals.
